21. Compassion in the Storms of Life

The winter season, especially after Christmas celebrations are complete can be a challenging time for many. The focus is now on debt and having bills to pay, and this can be a cold, dark season for many. It's also a new year with resolutions made, and the reality of having to keep them. When the challenges of attaining phases them, even more fail.

Does the Lord speak to you through storms of challenges? Perhaps, it's a conflict, or a separation/divorce? An inner storm of doubt? It may be a financial storm or a health catastrophe? A painful season of facing failure, or a struggle with mental illness? Perhaps it's walking through a time of profound loneliness? So many of us have been there. I have been there. I'm currently struggling, like so many.

Whatever challenge you are facing, it is easier if you meet it with self-compassion. True love and compassion for yourself. Your Father created you with an exuberant, intense love for His creation. You are His one-of-a-kind person, truly are a unique design, and there is no one like you.

Doubt and criticism will slow you down and get you to question yourself. Compassion, prayerful compassion - while trusting the Creator to lead you in the right direction will move you forward. That trust might be as small as a mustard seed, but that is all the Creator asks!

What about your relationships and showing love and compassion for others? There is a saying that "hurting people, hurt people." What this means is that your hurts, regardless of how much you hide them, will manifest in your behaviour. It will show up especially when you do not love yourself first, for the actions behind it will push others away.

Loving in the midst of challenges is not easy. You can show love and compassion for others when you exhibit love and compassion for yourself!

If you are in the eye of the storm, know this, Jesus has been where you are, and He knows what you are going through, and He's right there with you. He loves you in and through the storms of your life!
