20. When the Celebrations are Over
The Christmas season is like a fairy tale; it brings times of celebration, new excitement and wonder, and most everyone is happy and joyous. This time of the year or perhaps your circumstances may have you wondering what you are going to do now the celebrations are over and completed.
If there were issues before this time of year, they continue to exist when your life returns to normal. If indeed that was the case, they, the problems you have, are often a little easier to tackle after a break.
Perhaps you are dealing with a situation where there is a lack of communication, created by silence, conflict or misunderstanding. The time away from needing to deal with this is soon coming to an end or may have already approached. Before tackling these concerns of life, let's look at things from an entirely different perspective.
Today I went for a long swim at the pool. A man swimming laps was there for the second time in a row, and I took note of him again. He was very polite and kind during his quick greeting and while relaxing in the crowded, hot tub. His inner joy was evident, and he demonstrated something much more profound. He didn't need to express himself in words. His joy for life was lived merely through his demonstration of love and respect for himself and others around him. It was apparent he cared and loved himself and that love extended to others. Biblical! Everyone joyfully greeted him in the hot tub.
The fruits of the Holy Spirit, according to Galatians 5:22-23, are "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control."
The circumstances of your life and the choices you make will determine the way you love and treat yourself, and will also demonstrate how you express yourself to others. Just like the man at the pool, discussed in the last paragraph, expressing yourself with the fruits of the spirit will likely receive a caring and respectful response in return.
What this all means is about choosing to love yourself and acknowledging others with care and respect. It's about deciding to see everyone and everything in your life as highly significant and valuable. It's about respecting and not retaliating. It's about modelling your actions to value those of others. This behaviour is a demonstration of the fruits of the spirit. Perhaps this could be a part of your New Year's resolution!
